Position after 7... Bxc6

Main line

The chapter's main line, with the comments from the course.

  1. 1. e4 d5

The Scandinavian Defense forces an immediate pawn trade and gives us a solid structure that resembles what we get in the Caro-Kann Defense.

  2. 2. e5? c5

We seize central control and make White's e5 pawn a target.

  3. 3. f4

The McDonnell Attack looks aggressive but actually gives us an excellent Caro-Kann structure where we got c5 in one move.

  4. 3... Nc6

This gives us a fantastic Caro-Kann structure with the sweet f5 square for our pieces.

  5. 4. Nf3

White has better tries, but this normal development lets us continue our plan.

  6. 4... Nh6

This knight lands on an excellent spot, giving us jump opportunities to f5 and potential infiltration on d4 later.

  7. 5. Bb5 e6 6. O-O Bd7 7. Bxc6 Bxc6
