Main line
The chapter's main line, with the comments from the course.
1. e4 d5
The Scandinavian Defense forces an immediate pawn trade and gives us a solid structure that resembles what we get in the Caro-Kann Defense.
2. exd5
White takes back, and we have two main options: capture with our queen on that pawn or play the gambit style with knight to f6.
2... Qxd5
Better than 2...Nf6, as that move hands White a comfortable edge without any real effort on their part.
3. Nf3
This solid move ranks as the top choice instead of 3.Nc3, maintaining flexibility for our c-pawn so we can establish an optimal pawn structure using c4 and d4.
3... Bg4
Natural development that pins the knight. Taking on f3 next would ruin White's pawn structure.
4. Be2
White's ambitious plan involves expanding on d4, c4, and Nc3, but we're going to prevent this setup.
4... Nc6
Black develops naturally, and White has several options here including the main move 5.d4 .
5. O-O?
White's slow setup lets us castle queenside and take the initiative.
5... O-O-O
Having our rook positioned on d8 means White can never play d4, so we're already equal with good counterplay ahead.
6. Nc3 Qf5 7. d3 Nf6
