Main line

The chapter's main line, with the comments from the course.

  1. 1. e4 e5 2. Nc3

    Our Vienna setup.

  2. 2... Nc6

Black mirrors our development for now.

  3. 3. Bc4

We're targeting f7 while keeping options open for f4.

  4. 3... Nf6

Black develops naturally, eyeing our e4 pawn.

  5. 4. d3

Protects e4 and opens the diagonal for our bishop, while keeping f4 available.

  6. 4... Bc5

The Italian setup against us, aiming to reach g4 later.

  7. 5. f4

We push for central control with the classic f-pawn advance.

  8. 5... d6

Black shores up the e5 pawn, getting ready to challenge us on g4.

  9. 6. Nf3

We continue our hybrid setup, eyeing Na4 to trade for that annoying dark-squared bishop. Check out the model game: Nepomniachtchi, Ian - Anand, Viswanathan (2020).

  10. 6... Bg4

The most popular move, but now we can grab the bishop pair with Na4.

  11. 7. Na4

We trade off that pesky bishop and solve our kingside safety issues. No more worries about Nd4 or doubled f-pawns.

  12. 7... Nd4

This looks natural but it's actually suspect, we get full central control, better pawn structure, and the bishop pair.

  13. 8. c3

Kicks the knight and breaks the pin. Don't worry about doubled f-pawns, we're grabbing the bishop pair, and those pawns won't be doubled long with fxe5 coming.

  14. 8... Nxf3+

If 8...Bxf3 instead, then 9.gxf3 Nc6 10.fxe5 Nxe5 11.Bb3 gives us full control of the center with d4 coming and both bishops.

  15. 9. gxf3

Black's in trouble with both bishops attacked and no way to defend e5. Nc5 is coming next to pile on the pressure.
