Bird Opening - 1...e6 and 1...c6 Lines
Black meets 1.f4 with ...e6 then ...d5, building a solid center. Play 2.Nf3, 3.e3, 4.b3 and 5.Bb2, fianchettoing toward e5 before pushing c4 and castling. Watch for ...Be7 or ...Bd6 setups, where Bb5+ or Ne5 ideas give you the initiative. Aim for a flexible position with pressure on e5 and d4.
Let's learn the 1...e6 and 1...c6 Lines! Black builds a solid center with e6 and d5, and develops pieces with Nf6 and Nc6. We develop with Nf3 and e3, then aim for b3 to open our bishop's diagonal. Let's begin with 1.f4.

Dutch Variation (1...d5)
Black meets 1.f4 d5 with the Dutch Variation, often reaching 2...c5 and 3...Nc6. Play 4.Bb5, trade on c6 with 6.Bxc6, then castle, Bb2, and Qe2, planning Na3 and d3 next. Black gets the bishop pair, but your pieces stay active on the long diagonal for a slight edge.

1...c5 Lines
Black meets 1.f4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 with 3...d5, freeing its light bishop. You build calmly with 2.Nf3 and 3.e3, controlling e5 and covering d4. In the g6 line, avoid 7.d3, since ...Qa5+ wins a bishop. Aim for a flexible position where you hold the key central squares.

From's Gambit (1...e5)
Black meets 1.f4 e5 with From's Gambit, often following with 2...d6 and 4...g5. Develop with Nf3, g3, Nc3, trade on g6, then fianchetto Bg2 and strike with d4 and e4. Aim for a position where Black's doubled g-pawns and isolated d-pawn outweigh your own isolated e-pawn.

Other 1st moves (1...Nf6, 1...d6, 1...g6, 1...Nc6, 1...b6, 1...f5)
Black tries other setups against 1.f4, like 1...Nf6 heading for 2...g6. Against 1...f5 or 1...Nc6 lines, push e4 or use h3 tricks to keep pieces active. Aim for a solid, flexible setup with easy piece improvement.
