Main line
The chapter's main line, with the comments from the course.
1. e4 c5 2. c3 Nf6
Black develops the knight and blocks our d4 advance. We'll chase it forward with tempo.
3. e5
Now we kick the knight and claim central space.
3... Nd5 4. Nf3
We develop while keeping our options open, ready for Bc4 or d4 next.
4... Nc6
Black brings out the second knight, setting up counterplay later.
5. Bc4
Targeting the knight while developing naturally.
5... Nb6
Black's sharpest defense, the choice of well-prepared opponents.
6. Bb3
The current main line where Black must prove the f6-d5-b6 knight tour was worth the time. Our development lead gives good practical chances.
6... c4
Black's key idea - the pawn cramps our structure and prepares to capture on d4 later.
7. Bc2
Black's got that annoying c4 pawn, but we're ahead in development and asking the tough questions.
7... d6 8. exd6
Let's see if that c4 pawn becomes an asset or just a target that needs constant defense.
8... Qxd6 9. O-O
We've reached the pivotal moment that defines this entire variation. Multiple pawn break options are at our disposal while Black faces the challenging task of resolving king safety concerns.
9... Bg4
Nasty pin on our knight, threatening Ne5 and eyeing long castles for d-file pressure.
10. Re1
Shuts down Ne5 completely. Next up is b3 and Na3, skip h3 for now.
10... e6
Sensible development, keeping the structure solid.
11. b3 Be7
Normal development but we're sitting pretty.
12. Na3 cxb3 13. axb3 O-O 14. d4 Nd5 15. Qd3
Slight edge with plenty of good options ahead. 15...Bf5 16.Qd2 Bxc2 17.Nxc2 b6 18.c4
