3...Nf6 - Two Knights Defense: position after 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. d3 Bc5 5. c3
Position after 5. c3

Main line

The chapter's main line, with the comments from the course.

  1. 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6

Black picks the Two Knights Defense, attacking our e4 pawn right away. Most games still transpose to familiar Italian positions after Bc5, so we'll be back in our comfort zone soon enough.

  2. 4. d3

We support e4 and stay on our preferred Italian path, avoiding all the tactical chaos of Ng5 that Black might be hoping for.

  3. 4... Bc5

And we're back! This is our main Giuoco Piano setup. Black's typical plan runs ...d6, ...a6, ...Ba7, then ...h6, ...O-O, ...Re8, and ...Be6 while we develop with Nbd2, h3, and Re1.

  4. 5. c3

The foundation of our whole system! Next we'll castle, then Nbd2, h3, and Re1 before finally pushing d4 once everything's coordinated.
